School drop-offs, work runs and the occasional weekend away: that’s the life’s work of 99 percent of new SUVs. Direct auto insurance nashville tn And that’s typically what we judge them for here at Drive.

Increasingly, though, more people are heading to Australia’s remote areas for a getaway. One insurance direct That’s exactly what our 2015 Car of the Year was designed for. Dial direct car insurance number The Ford Everest was praised for its family friendliness and on-road driving, with judges noting it is very capable off-road.

But we wanted to see just how capable. Direct choice insurance services So we headed to Western Australia to take on one of the most challenging and most remote tracks in Australia ? the Canning Stock Route. Phone number for direct line car insurance Almost 2000km of rocks, sand, dust, mud and punishing corrugations.

It’s the ultimate test for an off-roader designed and engineered in Australia, an off-roader with the Toyota Prado in its sights. Open and direct car insurance To keep it honest, then, we took the updated Prado along for the ride, as well as its recently arrived sibling, the Fortuner.

Mitsubishi decided not to take part with its Pajero Sport, while Holden’s soon-to-arrive Trailblazer (a rework of the Colorado7) simply wasn’t available when we headed bush.

From the outset the Everest asserts itself as the complete package. Direct auto insurance customer service It’s sensibly sized and relatively quiet on freeways, a product of its clever noise cancelling technology that uses microphones and the sound system to dull certain frequencies. One call direct car insurance Cruising at 110km/h its 3.2-litre five-cylinder engine is relaxed but with enough beans for the occasional blast past a road train.

Indeed, that 470Nm is a winner, tapped into easily by the well calibrated six-speed auto. Auto direct car insurance phone number Push on harder and there’s 147kW to play with, so even with a podgy 2.4-tonne body the Everest is the punchiest here when it comes to performance.

Wheel on to the gravel and the Everest’s demeanour remains. Can direct insurance With a permanent four-wheel drive system, there’s no settings to be mucked around with, although the Terrain Management System is there when things get tougher. Canadian direct auto insurance quote It’s clever stuff, tailoring throttle response and traction control to everything from sand and rocks to mud.

Early on there’s fast, open roads, which are perfect for testing the stability of the Everest on slippery surfaces. Call direct auto insurance It does a fantastic job, settling impressively over bumps yet with a nice degree of competency to ensure you can push on, something helped by consistently weighted steering.

During our first stint of night driving one of the Everest’s flaws becomes apparent; its high beam lights are pitiful, forcing a mid-distance dim beam ahead of the car. Direct auto insurance claims Compared with the blaring lights on the rival Toyotas it’s a rare disappointment for the Ford, albeit one that can be fixed with a set of aftermarket driving lights.

Before long, though, the track turns into a mass of rocks and mud holes, the latter from recent rain. Direct insurance marketing inc The Everest’s light yet accurate steering makes it a snip to direct around the boulders, while the ample wheel articulation helps it scrabble up obstacles. Canadian direct insurance problems Its steel underbody protection also deflects the occasional hit effortlessly.

The Everest runs tyres designed primarily for on-road use (H/T, or highway terrain) whereas its Toyota rivals each have all-terrain tyres for added puncture resistance. Direct auto insurance hours Not that it slows progress; the 18-inch Bridgestone Duelers resisted punishment and punctures along the entire track.

But it’s the body control that is the real winner with the Everest. Canadian direct insurance quote While it has all those off-road smarts at slow speeds, the suspension damping is great once you ramp it up. Direct auto insurance reviews Even with successive large bumps the body settles quickly. Canadian direct insurance hours Through the flowing dunes mid-way into the Canning the Everest feels about as sporty as a serious off-roader can.

New name, new model and big expectations in the busy SUV space. Motor direct car insurance Yet while it’s a newcomer, the Fortuner has heritage beneath; its underpinnings and mechanicals are shared with the Hilux ute, a car marketed as “unbreakable”.

Under the bonnet is a new 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel, the same engine used in the Hilux and the Prado. Direct link insurance services At 2135kg it’s almost 300kg lighter than the Ford and a couple of hundred kilos below its better known stablemate, the Prado.

Little wonder, then, that the modest 130kW of power feels respectable on the open road. Insurance direct reviews Or, more correctly, it’s the 450Nm giving the Fortuner its hustle; that torque peak arrives at just 1600rpm, so it’s a stout cruiser and one that effortlessly ambles along at 110km/h.

On the road, though, it drives only the rear wheels because that engine drives through a part-time four-wheel drive system. Canadian direct home insurance bc On loose surfaces it’s a simple twist of a dial to engage four-wheel drive, but it’s an extra step its two rivals do without.

Once on the dirt the Fortuner settles into rougher going without fuss. Direct choice car insurance contact number Its light, lifeless steering feels no better on any surface, though, and is one downside to the Fortuner’s progress.

There’s ample suspension travel, something that makes light work of the Canning’s rocks and craggy creek crossings. Dial direct insurance reviews Toyota has also endowed it with good underbody protection, so the occasional scrape and bang does little to upset it.

As we learn, though, the design of that bash plate scoops up the dry spinifex grass to the point where we have to scrape it out with a stick (if it comes into contact with hot components it could start a fire).

As speed increases heading north it’s apparent the Fortuner doesn’t have the same body control as the Everest. How to buy cars from insurance companies direct The rear-end, in particular, will float on larger undulations, exaggerated when they’re in succession. Auto direct car insurance contact Not that it ever feels as though progress will slow. 1 call direct car insurance The Fortuner muscles up when required.

Inside the Fortuner doesn’t have the space of its rivals, especially in the middle row. Open and direct car insurance ni It’s narrow enough to make three-people across its girth an issue, and leg room is good rather than great.

Further back and the third row of seats folds clumsily against the side of the car. Canadian direct auto insurance While it makes for reasonable height, the width of the luggage area is compromised.

Yet it’s value where the Fortuner trumps its rivals. Direct insurance company inc The price of entry for this mid-level GXL is $54,990 for the auto we’ve tested, which undercuts the others by thousands. Flux direct car insurance contact number And while its equipment levels are not spectacular ? it’s missing sat-nav, something that comes in the leather-lined Crusade that matches the Prado’s asking price ? there are alloy wheels, a reversing camera and smart key entry with push button start.

Dig deeper, though, and there are signs of cost containment; the spare tyre is steel, for example, and there’s only single-zone ventilation (the Everest gets dual-zone and the Prado tri-zone).

As the terrain gets trickier, though ? think soft sand dunes and wicked corrugations ? the Fortuner’s relative simplicity and ruggedness shine. Nevada direct insurance Particularly impressive it its traction control system, which works beautifully to apportion drive to the wheels with traction; it’s cleverly calibrated and makes for easy progress.

It was only 1996 that the Prado appeared on the scene, yet now it’s the big daddy of the off-roaders. Pay direct auto insurance Put that down partly to its fuel tank. Bank direct insurance At 150 litres it’s almost double that of rivals, not only in allowing you to travel 1000km or more, even when towing (although the 2500kg tow capacity it limiting) but also for ensuring you generally don’t need to carry extra fuel.

But our Prado was carrying about 400kg of water because its spacious cabin and flexible seating arrangement easily swallowed our oversized water containers. Insurance direct Indeed space is a winner in the Prado, both in the middle row seats ? where there’s ample legroom and breadth ? and in the boot, where the floor is high but the space wide.

It’s the only one of our trio with a folding rear door, rather than a raising tailgate. Direct insurance bc It’s because of its spare tyre mounted on its rump, something that does nothing for aesthetics but makes it easy to access when you get a puncture. Direct auto insurance login That tailgate means less protection from the weather when accessing the rear, and it’s cumbersome if parked on a lean.

While the Prado recently received a new engine as part of its update, the basic body and interior wasn’t touched; it’s starting to show its age with the basic dash design and instrument cluster. Direct line car insurance contact number That said, it’s all very functional, and having the touchscreen high on the dash ensures it’s close to the driver’s line of sight. Hastings direct car insurance contact number And with sat-nav as part of the deal it makes it easier to keep track of the next turn, something more of an issue than we expected in what is extremely remote country. Call direct car insurance At $61,990, though, it’s the priciest here.

That dash doesn’t like the corrugations, jumping around over the more vicious patches. Top quote direct car insurance Like the rest of the car, though, nothing broke or came loose, a testament to its inherent toughness. Direct auto insurance claims address However, like the Fortuner, its underbody collected grass and required a bush clean.

The Prado also asserts itself as an extremely capable machine once the holes get deeper. Direct group insurance Brilliant wheel articulation keeps the 17-inch Dunlops in contact with the ground and the constant four-wheel drive system works with the traction control to claw its way up rocky outcrops.

But the Prado would also scrape its underbelly a fraction sooner than its rivals; while the weight it was carrying didn’t help, the ground clearance is rated at 220mm, 5mm less than the others.

As for that 2.8-litre engine, it doesn’t feel as sprightly as in the Fortuner; blame it on the 2.3-tonne heft. Dial direct insurance contact number But the easily accessible 450Nm ensures it generally gets the job done on partial throttle.

The downside is fuel use, with the Prado was the thirstiest on our trip, but it was also the only one to make it without needing a drink from our support car. Direct auto insurance jobs It did the last four kilometres into the tiny Aboriginal community of Kunawarritji registering 0km to empty on its trip computer, but it still drove to the bowser where we topped it with $3.40-per-litre fuel (ouch!).

All three of our contenders tackled some seriously tough terrain with relative ease. Free phone number for direct line car insurance That cars straight off the showroom floor can do a track as remote and challenging as the CSR is testament to the engineering inherent in each.

The Fortuner, though, is the first to be struck from the top rung, a product of its occasional compromises. Car insurance auto direct The suspension, for example, doesn’t have the best-of-both-worlds effortlessness, while the interior is less satisfying the further aft you venture.

Splitting the remaining two is tougher. Direct insurance contact number The Everest is the better drive by some margin, both with its effortless drivetrain and excellent suspension tuning. Employers direct insurance Plus, it has a spacious, well presented interior.

Great result for the Everest, being an Everest Titanium owner glad to see the standard survives. Auto direct car insurance telephone number I have been very happy with my vehicle since purchase but I am however concerned that since Ford have certified it as MA classification passenger car my ability to fit more suitable tyres is considerably difficult. Canadian direct insurance phone number I’d appreciate if you could comment on any tyres that are suitable with the necessary T speed rating as the brands I have researched are all below the acceptable speed rating for the Everest as an MA passenger car classification rather than the MC 4×4 classification which allows relaxation on the speed rating of the tyres that can be fitted to both the Fortuner and the Prado?
